2014 World Educational Robot(WER) American Invitational Tournament Chinese Contestant Won the First Prize

On August 7,2014(San Francisco, US time),the 2014 WER American Invitational Tournament was held in University of California, Berkeley. Contestants from the US, China, Japan, Canada, Philippine and etc. participated the final. After two days’ intense conpetition, the Chinese delegated group got the first prize.

The WER Contest is founded and held by the Federation of World Educational Robot, which releases a game theme based on the world hot topic or event, aiming to cultivate teenagers’ interest of science and technology, and to encourage them to design their own robots. The game theme of WER this year is “Prehistorical Age”. The contestants need to design, build and program different functioned and shaped robots to meet the requirement of different tasks. On the 5 square meters large, double layered arena, the robot need to help primitive human to live and produce, taking 17 tasks, such as Fruit Picking, Hand Drilling, Making Fire, Grain Harvesting, Stoneware Fetching and etc. The goal of WER is to become the most popular robot contest in the world.

WER rule research laboratory is built in Institute of Control Theory and Technology of Tsinghua University. Two main points can be applied to when distinguish WER from traditional robot contest. On the one hand, the final game rules are set on the gaming site, in order to be fair and test contestants’ skills and improvisational performance. On the the other hand, the game arena is more challenging since it contains two layers and the tasks are both on the ground and in the air.

Annual rulemaking of the contest is done by the Robotics and Automation Laboratory of Tsinghua University. WER seeks to help foster students’ creative and hands‐on ability by robotics project. The practice also proves that WER is a good platform guiding students to solve real life problems by the comprehensive use of knowledge in science, technology, engineering, math, etc., as well as a good experience for students to do teamwork.

As one of the most open, interesting and challenging robotics event in the globe,WER targets itself to be a robotics event that is dominated and participated by students. WER differs from other robotics events in that it offers extra tasks for students who want to challenge themselves and get extra scores, in that it has a two‐story contest arena.
